Studio import and templates

Bring an existing deck, document or design into Studio and read what survived, or start from a template built in, saved by you, or shared by your workspace.

Updated October 2026Studio2 of 3

Short answer

Drop a .pptx, .docx or .pdf (or a .penpot design where the pro editor is on) on the Studio home and it opens as an editable piece with an import report that scores how much was rebuilt natively. The template gallery holds nine built-in structures plus what you and your workspace saved; Use this template starts a brief from it and Save as template turns any finished piece into one.

Import a file

  1. Step 1

Drop the file on the Studio home

Drag it onto the drop zone, choose a file, pick one from your Library, or open the Microsoft picker for a file in SharePoint or OneDrive. Nothing is uploaded until you confirm.
  2. Step 2

    Watch the slides arrive

The import page shows how many slides have been read and marks each one ready as it finishes. Slides open for editing as soon as the file is done.
  3. Step 3

    Read the report, then edit

The report sits above the editor for an imported deck. Fix what it flags, re-theme if you like, and carry on with Remix or the editor.
Importable formats and what each becomes
FormatResult
.pptxA deck. Slides are rebuilt as editable text and shapes where possible; the rest is kept as a rendered picture of the original page.
.docxA deck. Each heading opens a slide and its list items become bullets; page layout is not preserved.
.pdfA deck, one slide per page. A page of heading plus bullets becomes a bullets slide, prose a title-and-content slide, and a page with no text a divider that names the page.
.penpotA design, pages and artboards and layers; offered only where the pro design editor is on.

Files are checked by their byte signature, not only their extension, so a renamed file is refused with a clear message. The limit is 50 MB per file and 20 imports an hour. Hidden slides are left out and the report says how many.

The import report

For a PowerPoint deck the report shows:

  • Rendered original — how many slides are shown as a picture of the original page, made by the renderer.
  • Editable reconstruction — the share of slides Studio could rebuild as editable text and shapes. It measures editability, not looks.
  • Measured similarity — the structural similarity of the rendered pages against a PowerPoint reference; 1.00 is identical.
  • Fonts — each font the deck uses, whether it is available, which fallback stands in, and which fonts were embedded in the file (listed but not used for rendering).
  • Theme — the palette and fonts extracted from the file, applied as the deck's theme.
  • Notes — anything else to know, and what the rendered original cannot promise: gradients and effects may be flattened, SmartArt without a fallback picture may differ, and a proprietary font without an open metric twin may change line breaks.

A Penpot import reports pages, artboards and layers, the fonts that fell back, and the features it could not bring across (masks, inner shadows, blend modes, stroke alignment, raw SVG layers, library color and text styles). Linked libraries are not imported; their components arrive as local copies. Older exports must be re-exported from Penpot 2.

Templates in the Studio navigation lists everything from Akili, your workspace and the public catalog, with filters by format (presentation, document, webpage, social), intent (pitch and fundraising, reviews and reporting, launches, events, education, sales) and publisher, and sort orders trending, best, new and A to Z. Collections are curated by Akili and your workspace's reviewers.

Use a template

Open a template for its structure, publisher, format, intent, version and use count. Use this template opens the create page with it chosen; you may leave the brief empty and let the template drive the outline. Try with my content drafts it privately from the knowledge bases you pick, with an optional note such as focus on Q3 net revenue retention; it costs a normal generation and is never published. Like a template to help it trend.

My templates

Open any finished piece and choose Save as template; Studio infers its structure and slots, keeps its look and saves it privately. The gallery also offers one-click templates from a finished deck (Make template) and from a brand kit. My templates lists what you saved and lets you change who sees each one:

  • Only me — the default; it appears under My templates.
  • My workspace — visible to teammates now, no review.
  • Everyone on Akili — the public catalog, after a review that usually takes one to three business days. You can withdraw a submission, read the reviewer's note, fix and resubmit.

Saving the same piece again creates a new version of the template.

Good to know

  • Imported decks and Publish. An imported deck is a normal deck: export it, share it, or schedule its slides as social cards from Publish.
  • Importing from a flow. There is no import node; a studio.create step generates from a brief instead.
  • Mobile. The app lists templates and creates from one; importing stays on the web.
  • Import is a deployment switch. An operator can turn it off; the drop zone then disappears. The same goes for Penpot, which follows the pro design editor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import Markdown or HTML?

Not as a piece. The importer takes PowerPoint, Word, PDF and Penpot files. Drop Markdown or HTML on the Context panel instead, or paste it into the brief, and let Studio generate from it; Markdown you drop also starts a knowledge base for you.

Why does my imported deck look right but I cannot edit the text?

Slides the importer could not rebuild natively are kept as drawn, which is a picture of the original page. The report's editable-reconstruction score tells you how many slides are editable. Lifting elements off an as-drawn slide needs native editing, which the operator turns on per deployment or per organization; until then, change those slides through Remix.

Does an import cost credits?

No. Imports are free; the limits are 50 MB per file and 20 imports an hour per person.

What is the difference between Use this template and Try with my content?

Use this template takes you to the create page with the template chosen, where you write the brief and pick context. Try with my content drafts the template privately from the knowledge bases you pick, with an optional note, and opens the result; both cost a normal generation.

How do I share a template with my team?

Open it under My templates and choose Share with my workspace; teammates see it in the gallery at once. Share with everyone on Akili submits it for review, which usually takes one to three business days, and a reviewer may approve it, reject it or ask for changes.
